Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a nationally established, locally implemented program that teaches people how to better prepare themselves for hazards that may affect their communities. CERT members are trained in basic disaster preparedness as well as basic disaster response skills, such as Fire Safety, Light Search and Rescue, Team Organization, and Disaster Medical Operations.
CERT trains and organizes teams of volunteers to assist members of our local community during emergencies when professional responders may not be immediately available to provide assistance. Before, during, and after disasters, CERT volunteer teams perform basic response activities, including checking in on neighbors, distributing information to the public, supporting Emergency Operations Centers, and helping manage traffic and crowds. The ability for CERT volunteers to perform these activities frees up professional responders to focus their efforts on more complex, essential, and critical tasks.Â
Keller CERT is organized and trained in accordance with standard operating procedures developed in conjunction with our sponsoring agency, Keller Fire & Rescue. In addition to the above listed activities, our CERT volunteers assist our first responders by providing Firefighter Rehab support during active fires, support the Outdoor Warning System (OWS) monthly testing of emergency sirens, provide fire extinguisher training, and assist with public safety during community events, such as Keller Lights, the Keller Lions Club & Homecoming Parades, and Holly Days.
